Ego Syahrial, Utomo Pratama I. (Research and Development Centre for Oil and Gas Technology “LEMIGAS”) Abstract Fossil fuel will be used extensively and CO2 emissions will rise over the next half century. As the result, this induced the CO2 concentration alteration in the atmosphere. CO2 is considered as the main contributor of greenhouse gases to the global warming. Consequently, earth’s temperature will increase and causes the climate changes such as prolong the dry season, increase the sea level as the ice in arctic glacier melting. Therefore CO2 emissions mitigation is necessary to prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference to the global life existence. A number of options exist that can reduce the CO2 emissions from the energy system. These include improved energy efficiency and a switch to renewable and nuclear energy. However, policies based on these options will only partly solve the problem. Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) constitutes another promising option that can drastically reduce these emissions. The international worldwide has consent to involve CO2 abatement through the Kyoto Protocol. As a part of the commitment and participation on combating the global warming, Indonesia has also signed the Kyoto Protocol in 1998 and ratified it through Law No. 17/2004. Despite those concerns, Indonesia currently faces substantial issues in oil production. Since in the last ten years the oil production has been declining but the demand for this energy can not meet. CCS-Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) by CO2 injection might answer the global warming challenges and alongside contribute to increase oil production in the near future. This paper describes a preliminary study of CCS-EOR opportunity in Indonesia. A brief explanation of geological setting and reservoir screening for site selection also presented. Then some discussions about the opportunity that can be catch will be highlighted as well as the analysis. It was hoped that this study would provide a standard guideline for determining CCS- EOR deployment in Indonesia. (This paper will be completely published at APOGCE-Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference on July 2009)

By Utomo Pratama, Usman Pasarai, Sugihardjo LEMIGAS Abstract The implemented and success or failure of an EOR process are always affected by reservoir geologic heterogeneities. Fluids movement in reservoir also may be very non uniform because of variations in rock properties. Factors of this type, unless properly identified and understood before the start of EOR process, will likely cause a project failure. The same case applies in laboratory scale. Before proceeded chemical flooding, tracer test was conducted to describe core heterogeneities and condition. Tracers are inert chemical compounds widely used to improve the description of hydrocarbon and water reservoirs. Utilizing Lithium as tracer solution, certain amount tracer volume was injected into core at constant rate 4 ft/day. The effluents were collected by Gilson sample collector. Each sample was analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). Vary Lithium concentration was reported as the tracer response data. The simplest and the robust way to interpret tracer data are to use temporal moments of the tracer response data. This method provides numerical calculation to estimate core pore volume. From several tracer tests using standard and native core, tracer response data showed some indication to determine the heterogeneities and even core condition. Gear at Natural or Neutral? I don't know why Indonesian pretend to be modern by using English terms in their daily conversations. For example just want to say "rapat" they prefer use "meeting" rather than bahasa terms. May be to anticipate of global free trade, they try to adapt the communications to be heard "intellectual" perhaps or internationally native. As the result they don't much pay attention on the implementation. Sometimes this could be happened if we use it in the wrong time, wrong place, and even could be worse in the wrong situation. When I went to let my car washed in particular area around Jakarta, I saw something funny there. Because the washing machine is autonomous, so they made some notifications before the car enter washing chamber, such as gear at natural, don’t hold handle, don’t push break, etc as the picture shown left. Do you notice something weird? Correct!... the sentence “gear at natural”, is the suspect here. How can it be? Since I was born and live until this age, it hasn’t ever been happened that gear can be natural. It is very clear the difference between “Neutral” and “Natural” !!! WTF… (whew I got angry)… I don’t know who made this notification, the owner maybe?
